I expected to like the serial killer aspect of this work the best. However, I was totally fascinated by all but the details of obtaining the 1893 World's Fair being held in Chicago. The Ferris wheel was invented for this show because the American engineers competed to come up with something at least as good as the Eiffel Tower, built for Expo Paris (Ferris of Pittsburgh). Bill Cody's Wild West Show was next door to the fair and was very successful. Planning for the fair has beenincredible. The difficulties were enormous. Health problems involved in the project at all levels. On the one hand, there were constant concerns about protection against typhoid and cholera epidemics. On another level, men in their 50s and 60s in charge of the fair had health problems that could not be set so that just suffered, or worse yet, one of them would die just about anything getting the less serious . One person was thrown out of key just need a appendectomy. It killed him.Although the city was full of dirt from coal and gas lamps, electricity was brought to the world fair. That alone made it seem all that spectacular. I'd like to enter into a time capsule, see the show for a day or two, Get Right back and return to modern life. This is because the show is super interesting and would be a real experience. However, we found the privations of life then that is unbearable for most. There is a serial killer with his own hoteladjacent to the World's Fair. He is quite interesting, but not really necessary to settle the details of the World's Fair.

Stimulating and Wonderful Read – Anne B. Anderson – New York
My wife's book club thought this was a winner. E 'cascade to me after reading. It 'a great story for both men and women. Not a light read. It teaches lessons about building things and human nature. After reading the book you want to talk with friends or your spouse. A city that is built for an event, a World's Fair or the Olympics, can be put in perspective by this book. The times may have changed, but the strengths and human weaknesses are timeless.

Located in the chaos of the late nineteenth century Chicago, Devil in the White City is one of the most meticulously researched and engaging book I've read in recent years. This is a page turner. I would be reading in one night a week and try to find was 4. The book hones in two fascinating events of the end of 1800: the architect Daniel Burnham and the construction of the fair in the world, and the notorious serial killer HH Holmes. Chicago, at the time was full of duality, at the same time a place of wildability and total despair. Burnham (and many others, including Olmsted, who designed Central Park) is designed to achieve the impossible, against all odds, the creation of a "white city" in the background of a metropolis dark and wrinkled. At the same time, the prey Holmes naive young women coming to the city in search of adventure and opportunity, building a house of "murder" in which he would slowly lure his victims to kill them. br / br / Recommendation: This book includes many interestingfacts and arguments, is something for everyone. Highly recommended.

This book alternates between the construction of the Chicago World Fair and the story of serial killer HH Holmes working in Chicago at the same time.br / br / I was much more interested in the story line serial killer in the history of World's Fair building line . It brought back my high school, when I read true crime almost exclusively. Because the serial killer part was less than half of the book, I do not feel like it was developed as it could have been.br / br / Architecture loversbe like the story line of building more than I'm not sure. I had trouble keeping all the different people who were directly involved and some of the more technical references went over my head.
